About nerdzmania

Nerdzmania is a name I once used to refer to a videogame rental place they had in a town where I grew up.

Then at some point it became more a concept: something about being obsessed with videogames and nerd stuff.

Now it is my "name" because I adopted this as a gamer tag a few years ago.

Enough about me!

I made this page so I could talk about this demo game I made, seen here being tested on a handheld device.

My Friendly A.I. Assistant Robot

Demo game made for Byte-Off 2022

This game was made using NESmaker. The music was made with Famitracker.

The story

This is the story of Sergio and Reggie, the hosts of a popular internet show called R3view Bros.

On their most recent episode, they review a new assistant robot powered by cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Reggie accidentally gets killed and his brother Sergio attempts to revive him with the help of the robot.

The original vision of the project

At first, I was thinking about making a story where the robot is more hostile. I was planning on having the player as Sergio, facing off against Reggie, as Reggie is being controlled by the robot, and later that day the player and the robot would team up to take down the evil corporation that made the robot, and then there would be the predictable plot twist where the robot would turn on the player.

But this is my first project on NESmaker so I had to dial it back a bit and go for something easier to do. My original vision would have required too many assets to be drawn and animated so I changed course. So I decided to focus on an idea that I had for a hidden mini-game where the player would take control of Reggie and play in a weird flying shooter level and instead of this being a hidden mini-game, it would be a part of the main story.

How it's made

In order to do this flying shooter level, I took NESmaker's Metroidvania module and tweaked it a bit.

The player's movement speed, acceleration and jump speed have been modified so they are not the same on each screen. The player will start moving automatically when entering the screen where the flying shooter level starts. Pressing Left will make the player go faster.

The collisions on the tiles in this stage have been set to "Ladder" for pretty much all the tiles, this allows the player to go up and down smoothly in a "Jetpack Joyride" fashion.
